“Last year more than 750 Silver Sunday events took place across the country, including tea parties, tai-chi, ballet workshops, ferry trips and many more. They were attended by thousands of older people across the country, offering them the opportunity to get out and make new friends, or try something new. This year Silver Sunday takes place on Sunday 7th October, and with your help, is set to be the biggest celebration of older people yet. Getting involved is simple – and with just four months to go, now is the perfect time to start planning your event.”

Silver Sunday – Supporting Older People

“Attending a Silver Sunday event can be the first step for many older people to get out, make friends, and try something new. As well as giving them confidence, it also encourages them to stay mentally and physically active, learn new skills, and ensure they feel they are a valued part of their community.

Hundreds of free events and activities for people aged 65 and over will be taking place across the country marking the sixth annual Silver Sunday. This year it takes places on Sunday 1st October, the same day as the United Nation’s International Day for Older People.”

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

This year World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is Thursday 15th June. It is a day to raise awareness of elder abuse, to try and influence the legislative process, and to fundraise to help prevent abuse in all of its forms.

The United Nations Assembly predicts that the global population of people aged over 60 will more than double to 1.2 billion by 2026, and that by 2050 over 20% of the world’s population will be aged 60 plus. They also calculated that 4-to-6% of older people have received some form of mal-treatment at home which can lead to serious physical injuries and long-term psychological consequences. Elder abuse is therefore a growing issue worldwide and one we need to act to stop now!
