Silver Sunday – Supporting Older People

“Attending a Silver Sunday event can be the first step for many older people to get out, make friends, and try something new. As well as giving them confidence, it also encourages them to stay mentally and physically active, learn new skills, and ensure they feel they are a valued part of their community.

Hundreds of free events and activities for people aged 65 and over will be taking place across the country marking the sixth annual Silver Sunday. This year it takes places on Sunday 1st October, the same day as the United Nation’s International Day for Older People.”

Here’s all the info you need to take part in this year’s Silver Sunday!

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

This year World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is Thursday 15th June. It is a day to raise awareness of elder abuse, to try and influence the legislative process, and to fundraise to help prevent abuse in all of its forms.

The United Nations Assembly predicts that the global population of people aged over 60 will more than double to 1.2 billion by 2026, and that by 2050 over 20% of the world’s population will be aged 60 plus. They also calculated that 4-to-6% of older people have received some form of mal-treatment at home which can lead to serious physical injuries and long-term psychological consequences. Elder abuse is therefore a growing issue worldwide and one we need to act to stop now!

But how do we combat elder abuse? Robert Hacking investigates…

National Old Stuff Day

National Old Stuff Day 2017

March 2nd marks National Old Stuff Day, a day to appreciate, well… old stuff! From long forgotten trinkets gathering rust and dust in the attic right through to treasured family heirlooms and antiques, today’s the day to acknowledge it all!

There are many ways to celebrate National Old Stuff Day, from learning about your family history, to fixing up old clothes, or even taking old items down to your local Age UK… With the latter in mind, we at Age UK London thought we’d raise awareness about National Old Stuff Day by having our staff discuss some of their most treasured possessions.
